When I saw this sign I knew it would be a fun drive. Turned out to be 118-miles of very interesting small towns! Each of these towns along the Ohio River are architectural marvels of old and new construction. Towns with interesting names like; Coal Grove, Ironton, Hanging Rock, Franklin Furnace, Wheelersburg, Sciotodale, New Boston, Portsmouth, Friendship, Rome, Manchester, Aberdeen, Ripley, Point Pleasant, and New Richmond. Here are a few pic's :
Ulysses S. Grant birthplace, Union General / 18th President
Point Pleasant, Ohio
The Ohio River is very similar to our Columbia River, just as wide or wider but it doesn't have the deep gorges. Many heavy industries and power plants along both sides of the river. Just the kind of road I like to explore!
Headed North from the river. Needed to bypass Cincinnati. Found Hwy.27.
And .. ran into .. Oxford, Ohio. Wow! Beautiful red brick buildings all around! It's a college campus. It's Miami University of Ohio. Established in 1809. 19,000 students. The town of Oxford was built afterwards in 1810 to support the college! I know them from having an NCAA Div.1 hockey team, the Redhawks.
I continued my stair-stepping geography method, headed over to Indiana and took some courthouse pictures :
Enjoyed all of these towns' Main Streets and old homes. I finally found Hwy.36, yes, the same one that runs along northern Kansas, and took it all the way to Decatur, Illinois and the home of Marty's parents Tom & Charlotte. A warm welcome and hugs, and .. special greetings from the dogs!
They invited over friends, Fred & Connie, for dinner and some good fellowship:
A very fun day. Tomorrow we travel to Springfield and the land and museums of Lincoln! Will visit with you tomorrow night!
